Microsoft have announced that 14.1 million Xbox consoles are to have their power leads replaced, after a safety issue was found.

Despite fewer than one in 10,000 consoles having the component failure, Microsoft have decided to replace the leads due to risk of fire hazard, which have seen seven cases of users receiving minor burns to their hands, and 23 reports of smoke damage to carpet or surrounding equipment.

Xbox owners can get their lead replaced free of charge by visiting the Xbox website and clicking on the "Power Cord Replacement for Xbox" link, or for users in the UK the freephone 0800 028 9276 number can be used to order one instead.

Gamers are advised to use the power cord replacement scheme even if the machine is fairly new, and Microsoft advise owners that they should turn off the Xbox when not in use until the replacement cord arrives.
