Microsoft's Xbox Live service will throw the doors wide open to non-subscribers during May, as part of a week-long deal with sports manufacturer Adidas which is being dubbed the Xbox Live Football Free-For-All.
Silver members will automatically have their accounts upgraded to a Gold one from 8am on Monday 8th of May until 8am on the 15th of May, giving access to the online multiplayer features of Xbox Live, with the main idea of the week being that gamers will get to play EA's 2006 FIFA World Cup, ahead of the forthcoming World Cup in Germany this summer.
A number of competitions will run alongside the special free-access week, including the chance to win 11 limited edition Xbox 360 - 2006 FIFA World Cup Edition consoles, whilst all normal Gold members will be able to download additional content including trailers and gamer pictures, which will be added to the Marketplace each day during the week.

Speed boost for British gamers
Internet service providers across the UK have been increasing connection speeds rapidly over the past few months, with new higher speed 8Mbps products from BT Total Broadband and other major ADSL providers.
The new faster speeds are already being offered in some parts of the country, where operator UK Online are providing a Home 22Mbps service over selected BT telephone lines in major urban areas.
Meanwhile gamers living in Telewest and NTL cabled areas can now receive up to 10Mbps download speeds on the top consumer package.
