Nintendo of America have released details of the launch weekend sales for their new little box of tricks - the Gamecube.

According to their press release, the machine made more money in the first day of being on sale ($98 million), than the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone movie's ticket sales over the three-day opening weekend, which "only" saw $93.5 million from ticket receipts - obviously this would be down to the fact that the Gamecube costs a lot more than a cinema ticket, but it's still quite an achievement.

The machine is also said to have sold twice the amount of units when compared with Microsoft's Xbox which launched just days before, and has even beaten Nintendo's very own Game Boy Advance sales figures. Games wise, Luigi's Mansion was the best selling title, followed by Star Wars: Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader, and Wave Race: Blue Storm.

Nintendo of America plan to have 1.1 million of the little Jet Black and Indigo Gamecubes in stores across America by Christmas. Nintendo Europe however are keeping tight lipped about what their plans are for the UK release, no date, no price, nothing - as soon as we know, you'll know.
