Italian publisher Black Bean have announced that they are to release an officially licensed Alfa Romeo motorsports title on the PC, PS2 and Xbox.

SCAR: Squadra Corse Alfa Romeo mixes racing with Role Playing Game and claims to be "the first 'CARPG' ever developed", although surely Codemaster's ToCA Race Driver series might feel it has the right to lay claim to such achievement.

The role playing aspects do appear to go much deeper in SCAR though, with nine different abilities making up a skills system which sees both your driver and AI competitors having to deal with issues such as basic driver's health and endurance, ability to intimidate other drivers in to making mistakes, time taken to recover from crashes and staying focussed on the racing action to prevent damage to both the car and driver.

A somewhat uncanny "Tiger Effect" skill also gives your driver the ability to turn back time, correcting what could have otherwise turned in to dangerous mistakes - and presumably used at the expense of other skills which your driver holds.

Races take place on a mix of professional racing tracks and normal roads, with a number of locations such as the city streets of Milan and Rome and making the Alfa Romeo's on offer feel right at home - an aspect which developer Milestone seems keen to emphasise throughout the game, even down to Italian style music.

SCAR: Squadra Corse Alfa Romeo is due for release on the PC and PlayStation 2 in May, with an Xbox version to follow later in the year.
