Sony have today announced that the PlayStation 2 will be cut to 169.99 in the UK, from Thursday August 29th, with mainland Europe having the price set at just over 249 euros.

"We are happy to announce that PlayStation 2 is now more affordable than ever and with over 145 more outstanding games due in the shop between now and Christmas, there has never been a better time to buy a PlayStation 2" said SCEE's Chris Deering.

It had been widely rumoured that a price cut would be announced to coincide with the Sony Experience that is being held alongside ECTS between August 29th and 31st at Earls Court in London, and that the show would be used to announce the new price point to the public.

The price cut comes 11 months after Sony announced last September that the the machine would retail at 199.99 - some 100 less than the original launch price.

We'll have full coverage of both ECTS and the PlayStation Experience consumer event, starting on Thursday.
