Sony Computer Entertainment Europe have announced this morning that the PlayStation 2 console has reached 50 million shipments.

The company say that some 50.03m units have been shipped worldwide since the console launched in November 2000, and that over 10 million have been shipped in less than 4 months since the 40 million barrier was broken back in September 2002.

    Breakdown of worldwide shipments
  • Europe/PAL: 16.02 million units
  • North America: 21.48 million units
  • Japan: 12.53 million units

Sony expect sales of the PlayStation 2 to improve further during the next year with a number of top titles scheduled for release and the launch of the PlayStation 2 broadband gaming network later this Spring.
