Codemasters have released the very latest screens of the in-race action, and details of the sound aspects which play an important part in the atmosphere of TOCA Race Driver.

Details about the sound side of the game have been released, with Codemasters saying that TOCA will be "the first game to fully implement Dolby Surround Sound in every area of a video game, including its sound track, the movie sequences, and in-game engine and crash sounds, delivering a fully immersive audio experience".

Codemasters have had engine noises recorded at MIRA on a rolling road chamber, which allowed cars to be driven under varying extreme conditions at speeds of up to 120mph, providing the full range of audio that will be required in the game.

Music won't just be played as an audio track on top of menus and game action, but will instead come from sound sources such as loudspeakers around a race circuit, radio's in the workshops and offices, providing for a more ambient and realistic feel to the game.

A number of well known songs have been included in the game, such as Iggy and the Stooges' "Search and Destroy", Al Green's "So You're
Leaving", Ash's "Death Trip 21", "Cowboy Song" by Thin Lizzy, Lynyrd
Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama" and "The Sea" from Morcheeba - an impressive line-up, and one which should appeal much more than the generic tunes which you often find in driving games.

Being story-based, TOCA also has to deal with speech between both drivers and other characters in the game, and because of this Codemasters worked with film production professionals at a New York soundstage, to ensure that every word spoken on screen sounds as if it's coming from the on-screen characters.

"TOCA Race Driver sets the new standard for audio within the driving game genre. By implementing a wide range of audio recording and production techniques, usually reserved solely for the film industry, the game delivers one of the most comprehensive uses of audio heard within a gaming environment." said Gavin Raeburn, Head of Studio and producer of the TOCA series.
