Sony have announced this morning that they are to launch a minituarised version of the PlayStation 2, which will be less than half the weight of the current machine, and a quarter of the size - just 2.8cm wide.

Somewhat suprisingly the machine will be launching in the UK and across Europe first, followed later in the day in America, and two days later on on November 3rd in Japan. A $149 price point has been set for the Charcol Black machine in America, but no price has yet been decided upon for the machine here in the UK, but anywhere between 100 and 150 seems likely.

The machine, which will have a model number of "SCPH-70003 CB" in the UK, comes with a built-in ethernet network adapter, two controller ports, two usb ports, two memory card slots, AV out and digital optical audio output. A standard Dual Shock 2 controller will also be bundled as standard with the sleek re-designed machine.

A vertical stand and multitap will also be available to coincide with the launch - neither the current multitap devices or vertical stands will be compatible with the new machine due to it's smaller size.
