The Xbox Live button appears on your dashboard screen as an extra option, which you select just as you would to listen to audio cd's or check the amount of memory saved on your hard drive.

Once in the Xbox Live section, you get to activate your account and set up a Gamertag ID, which is the unique name that you are known as on the global network, and allows other gamers to find you, and see who they are playing against. Other network settings and policies can also be viewed from within the menu.
